IQNA – Taqwa (God-fearing) is a kind of special protection of the Nafs (self), which is also called safeguarding the divine sanctuary.

Holy Quran

It means that Taqwa protects one from divine anger and punishment. Hence, it is related to self-control.

One of the Islamic beliefs that sets the ground for realization of self-control is the belief in mankind’s dignity and value because if one realizes his lofty status and his dignity, he would not be satisfied with unworthy and evil things. On the other hand, someone who does not consider himself worthy and dignified will agree to any humiliation and others will not be immune from his vices either.

The Holy Quran holds humanity in a very high position, something that we do not see in other schools. The Quran reminds mankind that he has been honored by God and can reach a status that no angel can. “We have honored the children of Adam, carried them on the land and the sea, given them pure sustenance and exalted them above most of My creatures.” (Verse 70 of Surah Al-Isra)

Humans’ dignity is inherent in his creation. It is because of his creation, intellect, and aptitudes as well as the divine rule and having infallible leaders.

Human dignity can also be acquired. The special dignity of the people who have Taqwa is an example. God says in Verse 13 of Surah Al-Hujurat: “The most honorable among you in the sight of God is the most pious of you. God is All-knowing and All-aware.”

So after the first criterion, which is creation, it is Taqwa that is the criterion for humans’ superiority and dignity. This acquired dignity can be considered as one of the most important outcomes of self-control.

Taqwa, which is frequently mentioned in the Quran as a value and is the source of many other values, is a kind of special protection of Nafs. Self-control is also a kind of safeguarding one’s self.
